Under the starry night sky, Maine and I walked hand in hand, listening to the silence surrounding us. As we neared the overhang overlooking the lake, we looked up when fireworks exploded directly overhead. Instinctively, I reached for Maine, my LOVE, brought her close and we held each other tightly, gently.
As we watched, I hugged Maine from behind and whispered in her ear, "Love, I'm here with you, now. I'll keep you safe, I'll protect you from those who don't understand you, US." I kissed her lightly just below her ear, on the spot where the crook of her jaw met her nape.
"Love," I said, "those fireworks were for you. Yes," I continued, "I had set it up especially for you." Maine turned to me, looked at me with eyes that started to glisten and took my hand.
We walked on. It was quiet. I whispered, "I'll love you always, even when the storm of our daily lives engulfs us. I'll always find time for you, you know that." Maine looked up at me, simply nodded and said, "I know you'll always be there, always have been there, for me." I touched her chin to turn her head forward.
Maine smiled, walking softly over the flower petals strewn on the dewy grass. She turned to me again, but this time, tears formed in her eyes.
Her tears fell, head melting on my shoulder. We stayed that way a while, savouring the silence, the calm. Suddenly, sobs escaped from deep within Maine. Overwhelmed, my heart ached with her. We cried, uncontrollably. We held each other tightly, comforting each other, reassuring each other that we will overcome the pressure and demand from our hectic, sometimes thankless lives and careers. Maine finally composed herself, as I wiped the tears from her eyes. "Let's eat," I said, "at the same table that the viewers saw on TV this afternoon. This time though, I had the hotel staff prepare our meal, jazz up the setup with candles and ambient lighting." Our times alone were always precious for us two.
In those brief moments, we were ONE. We promised that we would love and support each other, ALWAYS. She took my hand, dragged me back through the hotel lobby, into the Porsche, to drive back to the city; back to the clamour awaiting us.
